How Expressive Writing Can Help Heal Pain

Tonight we have a special guest, Kasia Rachfall. Kasia is a trauma therapist somatic coach and expressive writing coach. She holds writing groups throughout the Okanagan to help people connect with their creativity and their voice to release fear and set themselves free. We often refer to journalling in pain classes and yet many people have blocks. Let’s release the blocks!

Chronic pain lives not only in the body, but also in the nervous system, in the stress responses we can’t turn off and in the untold stories we carry. Writing offers a powerful way to process and metabolize these experiences, helping to shift pain patterns, regulate the nervous system, and even improve immune function.

In this workshop, we’ll explore expressive writing and incorporate somatic tracking. Both are practices of tuning into the body’s wisdom and writing from that perspective to unlock deeper insight and transformation.

We’ll discuss evidence-based research, including James Pennebaker’s groundbreaking work on writing and health, and explore how stress and trauma get stored in the body when they aren’t fully processed. Writing can help move these experiences out of the mind and onto the page, reducing emotional overwhelm and preventing circular thinking.

This session includes a short talk, a guided writing exercise, and a take-home list of writing topics to continue the practice. No prior writing experience is needed, just an open mind and curiosity.
